Periodontal disease (gum disease) is when you have an infection in your gums. Good care for your teeth and gums can lower your risk of infection.

Gum Disease Facts

  • Gum disease does not hurt, so you might not know you have it.
  • Healthy gums do not bleed. If your gums bleed you may have gum disease.
  • Bad breath is a sign that you may have gum disease.
  • Adult teeth should not fall out or be loose. Loose and falling out teeth may mean you have gum disease.
  • Gum disease can be treated if you catch it early.

How to Avoid Gum Disease

  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco.
  • Brush your teeth at least 2 times a day. One time should be at bedtime.
  • Floss your teeth every day.
  • See your dentist regularly. Always be on time for your appointments. If you cannot keep your appointment call the dentist at least 1 day ahead of time.
