Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a safe and effective fluoride treatment that can halt tooth decay.
A very small brush is used to apply SDF to the surface(s) of the tooth affected by decay. The application process is quick, painless, and does not require a shot or a drill. SDF can also stop decay from spreading.
It is an effective treatment for both children and adults whose cavities cannot be treated at one appointment. For very young children who are fearful of going to the dentist, SDF may be an alternative to the need for treatment in a medical facility under general anesthesia. It is also recommended for children with disabilities or those who are unable to sit for longer cavity treatments.
When SDF is applied to the decayed area of the tooth, it will stain black. This means the decay in the tooth is being stopped. SDF will not stain areas of the tooth that are not decayed.
In some cases, no further treatment of the decayed tooth is necessary. In other cases, teeth treated with SDF will still need a filling or crown in the future. Your dentist will watch the tooth and determine if further treatment is needed.
If SDF is recommended for your child, your dentist will answer any questions you may have. SDF for your child is covered through your dental benefits at little or no cost to you. |
