Non-Traditional Oral Screening and Fluoride Varnish (NTFV) in the Medical Home

DentaQuest launched the NTFV program statewide in January, 2014 which offers oral screening and fluoride varnish to improve the oral health of TennCareSM eligible members six (6) months through five (5) years of age.  Primary Care Physicians, Pediatricians, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners who are currently enrolled with one of the TennCareSM MCOs are eligible to participate in this program.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists and the American Dental Association all recommend that children be seen by a dentist by their first birthday.  Primary care providers recognize that oral health is integral to the well-being of a child and that many long-term dental issues can develop early in life, often before the first tooth even appears.
It is critical in the first year of life for assessment of risk and intervention to be performed in order to prevent tooth decay.  Very young children usually see a primary care provider more than eight times for well-child care before their first visit to a dentist.  Primary care providers are in a unique position to identify existing problems and provide guidance to parents.
TennCareSM providers interested in participating in the program must complete the verification process, online training course and credentialing documents to provide this service and bill DentaQuest.
Providers are required to complete and document in the medical record the following on the same date of service:

  • Oral evaluation which can also include caries risk assessment
  • Fluoride varnish application by the credentialed provider
  • Educate patients on oral health
  • Referral to a dental home (dentist)
DentaQuest would like to extend an offer to you to participate with us in this program to further serve your community.  DentaQuest is familiar with the unique opportunity you offer TennCareSM Members and we would love to support you in providing this valuable fluoride varnish/dental screening service.
