Are you afraid of the dentist?

If you are, you're not alone—lots of people fear the dentist. They don’t go to the dentist because of their fear. We would like to help you with your fear. Regular dental checkups are vitally important to both your oral health and your overall health.
 
We suggest that you find a dentist that you like and trust. Dentists care about your oral health and want to help you. When you visit your dentist, tell him or her that you are afraid. The dentist will work with you on overcoming your fear. If the noises at the dental office scare you, take music along. Breathing slowly in and out can help you relax. Try thinking of something positive such as a favorite place or a good memory.
 
If you are worried about pain, you should know that dentists have lots of new ways to work on your mouth. Dental procedures today cause none to very little pain. The more you see the dentist, the better your oral health will be. If you are experiencing any mouth or tooth distress, getting proper care will make you feel better. Try to see your dentist two times a year.

It's important to help your children develop a good attitude about dentist visits. These tips will help:

  • Brush and floss together with your child. Put on your favorite song. Make it fun!
  • Tell your children that the dentist will make their smile bright and healthy. The dentist will count and clean their teeth.
  • Don’t talk to your child about pain or use the words "drill" or "shot."
Don’t tell your child scary dentist stories. Don’t let other children tell scary stories either.
